Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager/Director, the Charge Nurse is responsible for efficient patient flow within the unit, delegation of patient assignments, and provides support to caregivers aligning their level of training, experience, and the patient acuity.
The Charge Nurse works in collaboration with medical providers and ancillary caregivers to ensure the quality of patient care.
The Charge Nurse employs intellectual, interpersonal and technical skills using the nursing process to assist patients in achieving maximum health potential.
Serving as the patient's advocate, the Charge Nurse provides direct patient care, as needed, assumes responsibility and accountability for nursing care for patients of various ages as defined by the department scope of service.
The Charge Nurse is a resource to ensure the implementation of the plan of care, adherence to policies and compliance with established standards of care/practice.
The Charge Nurse may or may not provide input to caregiver performance and evaluations.
NOTE:
The Charge Nurse for the Childbirth Center (CBC) is required to triage patients and ensure MSE is performed on all unscheduled outpatients.
Demonstrates competency in age specific skills for patients:
neonate/infant, child, adolescent, adult, geriatric patients.
Incorporates physical, motor/sensory adaptation, cognitive, psychosocial factors into the nursing process (e.

Essential Functions:
Assessment:
o Childbirth Center - SJH:
Will perform or ensure a medical screening exam is completed on all unscheduled outpatients presenting to the department.
Responsible for patient assignment and maintaining appropriate staffing ratios.
o Correlates assessment data and interprets findings to identify individual patient needs and problems.
Assigns appropriate caregivers based on patient needs.
o Demonstrates clinical competency.
o Delivers direct patient care as assigned.
o Conducts problem-oriented assessments according to standards for admission, ongoing re-assessment, and transfer/discharge.
Planning:
o Initiates and updates patient plan of care based on patient condition, age, developmental status and progress, involving the patient and significant others, while effectively coordinating and utilizing health team members.
o Demonstrates critical thinking and problem solving skills.
o Organizes interventions based on clinical priorities.
Intervention:
o Through direct efforts, as well as delegation to others, implements patient plan of care, including nursing, physician, and multidisciplinary directives, with compassion and concern for the patient's total need:
emotional, spiritual, physical, comfort, safety.
Advocates for each patient as a unique individual, deserving of compassion, respect and dignity without prejudice.
o Assures patient and family receive education to promote recovery and wellness during hospitalization and essential skills for safe self care after discharge.
o Coordinates patient flow, transfer and discharge, assuring coordination with the healthcare team.

Responsible for all aspects of unit operations during the shift to include, but not limited to, crash cart checks, emergency equipment checks, Pyxis inventory, refrigerator temp, unit activity/acuity tool, quality controls, and unit specific equipment.
o Provides nursing input to and solicits feedback from medical staff as appropriate.
Supervision:
o Participates in interdepartmental and intradepartmental problem solving and collaboration.
Serves as a positive, progressive, professional role model to nurse caregivers by actively participating in effective collaboration and operations.
o Demonstrates knowledge and appropriate interpretation/communication or implementation of hospital-based values.
Identifies breaches in standards of care, practice, and conduct, and addresses them effectively with staff involved.
Resolves conflict in a direct, supportive manner with feedback to the Nurse Manager/Director.
Provides input for caregiver performance and evaluations.
Human Resources:
o Maintains budget parameters for shift staffing, through monitoring and adjusting staff mix and number according to patient census and acuity.
Controls overtime for the shift.
o Welcomes, facilitates orientation, including checklist of new caregivers.
Encourages individual caregivers to collaborate with Nurse Manager/Director in assessing and meeting identified educational needs of caregivers.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT o Resource Utilization:
Ensures that appropriate supplies and equipment are available, accounted for and used in a cost-effective manner consistent with department/unit budget.
o Safety:
Helps to provide a clean, comfortable environment for patients, families and others by taking appropriate safety precautions effectively responding to urgent safety situations.

Organizes, prioritizes and completes activities and assignments in an efficient manner.

Education:
Coursework/Training - Graduate of an accredited nursing school or proof of licensure by the State of California.
Experience:

Licenses/Certifications:
State of California as a Registered Nurse.
